Happy Valentine's Day, Don't Forget To Listen To Music!
It is a day devoted to love whether you like it or not. What better way to set the mood than to put on some tunes. Driving home this evening I listened to many possibilities. All-4-One was one (pun intended). K-Ci & JoJo was another. Don't get me wrong those are fantastic options.
What if for a moment we take a left turn and take a chance on a jazz tune that can take your mind to a place full of love and devotion. A jazz tune so powerful, I nearly veered off the road.
That tune is of course, In A Sentimental Mood by two jazz greats, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. It's an absolutely transformative piece of music. Seemingly improvised, yet with a singular theme and a familiar refrain. That familiar refrain is heard throughout the song and every time you hear it, it absolutely pulls at your heart. For a brief moment you try to remember which film you heard it in. For a quick second it feels like you've listened to it at a party. It is certainly possible, but what is more remarkable about this song is that it reminds you how you felt, when you first fell in love.
