Christine and The Queens - An Appreciation
We always remember moments. I talk about that a lot. A specific moment in time that you can trace back in your head ten, twenty years ago and remember the first time you heard a beautiful song. Everyone remembers the first time they heard Lauryn Hill sing Killing Me Softly (more on that later). I bet everyone can remember the moment they heard Barbie Girl for the first time. I'm not using Barbie Girl as an example of a great song. I'm using it as an example of hearing something you never heard like it before that particular moment.
The first time I heard Safe and Holy by Christine and The Queens, I was completely dumbfounded. Her voice, the production, the lyrics. All of it left me awestruck. I have been reading about her for quite some time, but didn't really dig into her music and let's just say I am sorry I'm arriving so late to her party. And what a party it is. Full of ambiguous references, stark contrasts and beautiful imagery. Listen to the song below, and maybe we will have a moment that we will now share forever. Amazing music can do that!
